    DEFINE IPM

IPM Is an integrated pest management. Is a program me that is based on prevention, monitoring, and control which offers the opportunity to eliminate or drastically reduce the use of pesticides, and to minimize the toxicity of an exposure to any products which are used. IPM does this by utilizing a variety of methods and techniques including cultural, biological and structural strategies to control a multitude of pest problems. IPM is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach that offers a wide varieties of tool to reduce contact with pest and exposure to pesticides.

    Differences between Millipede & Centipede are as follows;
    1. The body of a centipede is flat in shape, while The body of a millipede is mostly cylindrical in shape.

    2. Centipedes are yellowish-gray to brown in color, while Millipedes are dark reddish-brown to black in color.

    3. The body of a centipede is divided into 15 to 100 segments, while Millipedes can have anything between 11 to 150 segments.

    4. Centipedes have long legs that extend sideways from their body while, Millipedes have short legs that do not extend from their body.

    5. Centipedes have long antennae on the top of their head, while Millipedes have short antennae

    6. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, while Millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment, one pair on each side. This is the most striking characteristic that differentiates a centipede from a millipede. However, it is important to note that each of the first three segments of their body, have only one leg on each side.

    7. Centipedes move very fast and has a flexible body, while Millipedes are slow-moving creatures.

    8. Centipedes are carnivorous and feed on small organisms, while Millipedes are scavengers that feed on decomposing organic matter.

    9. Centipedes are equipped with poison glands to attack and kill their prey. However, their bite is rarely fatal to humans, while Millipedes do not possess poison glands. They curl their body and squirt a foul-smelling, corrosive liquid when threatened.

    10. Centipedes do not reproduce by mating or copulation. Instead, the male centipede deposits spermatophores (bundles of sperms) and the female is meant to engulf the spermatophore, on finding it. The female lays around 50 eggs, after a period of few months. The females of most species of centipedes protect their eggs and nurse their offspring till they can fend for themselves but Millipedes reproduce by mating, whereby the sperms of the male are deposited within the female. The female millipede can lay up to 300 eggs at a time, after a few months. The females of most species of millipedes do not take care of their eggs.

    Thank you!

Integrated Pest Management is a process of bringing together all the methods adopted in controlling pests which are chemical, biological, physical-control and cultural methods to bring the damages and problems(havoc) of pests to a maximum reduced level in a way that the control methods are not toxic or harmful to the non-target e.g man and his environment.
The purpose of Integrated Pest Management is to reduce the number of pests not to eradicate them and not harm the non-target, man.

    TOPIC: INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) means the careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment. IPM emphasizes the growth of a healthy crop with the least possible disruption to agro ecosystems and encourages natural pest control mechanisms.

IPM is a flexible approach which makes the best use of all available technologies to manage pest problems effectively and safely. IPM strategies consist of three basic components:

•Prevention of pest build-up through use of appropriate crop cultivation methods

•Observation of the crop to monitor pest levels, as well as the levels of natural control mechanisms, such as beneficial insects, in order to make the correct decision on the need for control measures

•Intervention where control measures are needed

An elementary principle of effective IPM is to develop pest control strategies that take into account all relevant control tactics and locally available methods, and are sensitive to local environment and social needs. The successful user of IPM will evaluate the potential cost effectiveness of each alternative as well as the whole control strategy.

    Importance of IPM
The demands of a growing world population for food and other agricultural products require farmers to produce more crops on existing farmland. To increase these yields requires continuous improvement of agricultural technologies to minimize crop losses. The challenge is to do this while protecting the environment.

IPM is a big part of the solution. Increasingly it is being adopted in both developed and developing countries for long-term, sustainable agriculture that achieves adequate, safe and quality food production, improves farmer livelihoods and conserves non-renewable resources.

    TOPIC: INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT

IPM is a site-specific strategy for managing pests in the most cost-effective, environmentally sound and socially acceptable way.

For farmers, IPM is the best combination of cultural, biological and chemical measures to manage diseases, insects, weeds and other pests. It takes into account all relevant control tactics and methods that are locally available, evaluating their potential cost-effectiveness. IPM does not, however, consist of any absolute or rigid criteria. It is a flexible system that makes good use of local resources and the
latest research, technology, knowledge and experience.

    Implementation of IPM
This lies with farmers, who adopt practices they view as practical and valuable to their activities

    Benefits of IPM
    a. Improved crop profitability due to better pest control measures and appropriate use of crop protection products
    b. Stable, reliable and quality crop yields
    c. Decreased severity of pest infestations
    d. Reduced potential for problems of pest resistance or resurgence
    e. Increased consumer confidence in the safety and quality of food and fiber products

It is a process you can use to solve pest problem while minimizing risks to people at the environment. IPM can be used to manage all kinds of pests anywhere in urban agricultural and wild land or natural area. Rather than simply eliminating the pest, using ipm means looking at environmental factors that affects the pest and its ability to thrive. Armed with this information unfavorable conditions for pests can be created.

Centipedes are terrestrial arthropods belonging to class chilopoda. Centipedes are flexible, dorsoventrally flattened arthropods. Millipedes belong to class Diplopoda and are more rigid arthropods distinguishable by their sub cylindrical shape. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, while millipedes have two pairs.
While most centipedes are known for their speed, millipedes move slowly and burrow.
    DIFFERENCES IN DIET
Centipedes and millipedes also vary in diet. Centipedes are carnivores and kill their prey by injecting them with venom. Millipedes feed primarily on decaying organic matter and they may eat the roots and leaves of seedling plants. Millipedes are ecologically esteemed as agents of microbial decomposition and soil nutrient cycles.
Centipedes have maxillipedes with which they attack prey. These are the venomous modified legs of the centipede's first segment and can be used in defense,as well. A centipede bite can kill small prey, but typically is not life threatening to humans. In the absence of stinging structures, millipedes employ defensive secretions in order to protect themselves from predators. Millipedes will also curl its body as a defense mechanism.
While centipedes sometimes bite humans, it is rare that that their venom will produce a severe reaction. However, small children and those with other insect allergies should be watched carefully following a centipedes bite.
    DIFFERENT IN HABITAT
Centipedes and Millipedes prefer moist protected outdoor habitats such as rotting logs, leaves, bark and the undersides of stones.

Integrated pest management is an effective, environmentally friendly approach to pest management that relies on a combination of commonsense practices.

CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION DEFINITION OF IPM
A systematic approach to managing pests which focuses on long-term prevention or suppression with minimal impact on human health, the environment and nontarget organisms. IPM incorporates all reasonable measures to prevent pest problems by properly identifying pests, monitoring population dynamics, and utilizing cultural, physical, biological or chemical pest population management methods to reduce pests to acceptable levels.
MASSACHUSETTS STATE LEGISLATURE'S DEFINITION OF IPM
A comprehensive strategy of pest control whose major objective is to achieve desired levels of pest control in an environmentally responsible manner by combining multiple pest control measures to reduce the need for reliance on chemical pesticides; more specifically, a combination of pest controls which addresses conditions that support pests and may include, but is not limited to, the use of monitoring techniques to determine immediate and ongoing need for pest control, increased sanitation, physical barrier methods, the use of natural pest enemies and a judicious use of lowest risk pesticides when necessary.

    Difference between millipede and centipede

    Answers:
Both centipedes and millipedes have segmented bodies and belong to the group Myriapoda. Both breathe through spiracles and have no direct copulatory organs. However, many differences exist between centipedes and millipedes.
Centipedes are terrestrial arthropods belonging to Class Chilopoda. Centipedes are flexible, dorsoventrally flattened arthropods. Millipedes belong to Class Diplopoda and are more rigid arthropods distinguishable by their subcylindrical shape. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, while millipedes have two pairs.
While most centipedes are known for their speed, millipedes move slowly and burrow.
    DIFFERENCE IN DIET
Centipedes and millipedes also vary in diet: centipedes are carnivores and millipedes are primarily detritivores. Centipedes are carnivorous and kill their prey by injecting them with venom. Millipedes feed primarily on decaying organic matter and they may eat the roots and leaves of seedling plants. Millipedes are ecologically esteemed as agents of microbial decomposition and soil nutrient cycles.
Centipedes have maxillipeds with which they attack prey. These are the venomous modified legs of the centipede’s first segment and can be used in defense, as well. A centipede bite can kill small prey, but typically is not life threatening to humans. In the absence of stinging structures, millipedes employ defensive secretions in order to protect themselves from predators. These secretions are produced by their segmental defensive glands. A millipede will also curl its body as a defense mechanism.
While centipedes sometimes bite humans, it is rare that their venom will produce a severe reaction. However, small children and those with other insect allergies should be watched carefully following a centipede bite. In the event of bite-related medical concerns, a medical professional should be contacted at once.
    DIFFERENCE IN HABITAT
Centipedes and millipedes prefer moist, protected outdoor habitats such as rotting logs, leaves, bark and the undersides of stones.

  133. Integrated pest management (IPM), also known as integrated pest control (IPC) is a broad-based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests. IPM aims to suppress pest populations below the economic injury level (EIL).
IPM is used in agriculture, horticulture, human habitations, preventive conservation and general pest control, including structural pest management, turf pest management and ornamental pest management.IPM is the selection and use of pest control actions that will ensure favourable economic, ecological and social consequences and is applicable to most agricultural, public health and amenity pest management situations. The IPM process starts with monitoring, which includes inspection and identification, followed by the establishment of economic injury levels. The economic injury levels set the economic threshold level. That is the point when pest damage (and the benefits of treating the pest) exceed the cost of treatment.

Integrated pest management, or IPM, is a process you can use to solve pest problems while minimizing risks to people and the environment. IPM can be used to manage all kinds of pests anywhere in urban, agricultural, and wildland or natural areas.

The most effective, long-term way to manage pests is by using a combination of methods that work better together than separately. Approaches for managing pests are often grouped in the following categories.
    Biological control
Biological control is the use of natural enemies—predators, parasites, pathogens, and competitors—to control pests and their damage. Invertebrates, plant pathogens, nematodes, weeds, and vertebrates have many natural enemies.
    Cultural controls
Cultural controls are practices that reduce pest establishment, reproduction, dispersal, and survival. For example, changing irrigation practices can reduce pest problems, since too much water can increase root disease and weeds.
    Mechanical and physical controls
Mechanical and physical controls kill a pest directly or make the environment unsuitable for it. Traps for rodents are examples of mechanical control. Physical controls include mulches for weed management, steam sterilization of the soil for disease management, or barriers such as screens to keep birds or insects out.
    Chemical control
Chemical control is the use of pesticides. In IPM, pesticides are used only when needed and in combination with other approaches for more effective, long-term control. Also, pesticides are selected and applied in a way that minimizes their possible harm to people and the environment. With IPM you'll use the most selective pesticide that will do the job and be the safest for other organisms and for air, soil, and water quality; use pesticides in bait stations rather than sprays; or spot-spray a few weeds instead of an entire area.

  139. WHAT IS KNOWN BY IPM

Integrated pest management (IPM), also known as integrated pest control (IPC) is a broad-based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests. IPM aims to suppress pest populations below the economic injury level (EIL).

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation defines IPM as "the careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment. IPM emphasizes the growth of a healthy crop with the least possible disruption to agro-ecosystems and encourages natural pest control mechanisms. Entomologists and ecologists have urged the adoption of IPM pest control since the 1970s. IPM allows for safer pest control. This includes managing insects, plant pathogens and weeds.

Globalization and increased mobility often allow increasing numbers of invasive species to cross national borders. IPM poses the least risks while maximizing benefits and reducing costs.
In conclusion, IPM extended the concept of integrated control to all classes of pests and was expanded to include all tactics. Controls such as pesticides were to be applied as in integrated control, but these now had to be compatible with tactics for all classes of pests. Other tactics, such as host-plant resistance and cultural manipulations, became part of the IPM framework. IPM combined entomologists, plant pathologists, nematologists and weed scientists.

Both centipedes and millipedes have segmented bodies and belong to the group Myriapoda. Both breathe through spiracles and have no direct copulatory organs. However, many differences exist between centipedes and millipedes.

    CENTIPEDES
Centipedes are terrestrial arthropods belonging to Class Chilopoda. Centipedes are flexible, dorsoventrally flattened arthropods. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, most centipedes are known for their speed. centipedes are carnivores. Centipedes are carnivorous and kill their prey by injecting them with venom.

Millipedes belong to Class Diplopoda and are more rigid arthropods distinguishable by their subcylindrical shape. Millipedes have two pairs. Millipedes move slowly and burrow. millipedes are primarily detritivores. Millipedes feed primarily on decaying organic matter and they may eat the roots and leaves of seedling plants. Millipedes are ecologically esteemed as agents of microbial decomposition and soil nutrient cycles.

    DIFFERENCES IN HABITAT
Centipedes and millipedes prefer moist, protected outdoor habitats such as rotting logs, leaves, bark and the undersides of stones.

    1. Define integrated pest management:- Integrated pest management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. also those who argue that IPM requires the ability to spray pesticides immediately after identifying a pest problem are not describing IPM. Conventional pest control tends to ignore the causes of pest infestations and instead rely on routine, scheduled pesticide applications. Pesticides are often temporary fixes, ineffective over the long term.

IPM is a managed pest management system that:

    eliminates or mitigates economic and health damage caused by pests;
minimizes the use of pesticides and the risk to human health and the environment associated with pesticide applications; and
uses integrated methods, site or pest inspections, pest population monitoring, an evaluation of the need for pest control, and one or more pest control methods, including sanitation, structural repairs, mechanical and living biological controls, other non-chemical methods, and, if nontoxic options are unreasonable and have been exhausted, least toxic pesticides.

    2. State the differences between millipede and centipede

    Differences in Diet

    Differences in Habitat

Centipedes and millipedes prefer moist, protected outdoor habitats such as rotting logs, leaves, bark and the undersides of stones.
What Are Centipedes and Millipedes Classified As?

Although they resemble insects, centipedes and millipedes both are classified as arthropods. Insects have three body segments. Centipedes and millipedes have many segments. Insects have three pair of legs but centipedes have one pair of legs on each body segment. Millipedes have two pair of legs per body segment.

IPM:Also known as integrated pest control(IPC)IS an approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests. Ipm aims to suppress pest population below the economic injury level(EIL). Worldwide, the manufacture and sale of pesticides is a multimillion+dollar industry. opponents of pesticides believes that their harmful effects outweigh the benefits, especially in the the face of increasing genetic resistance to pesticides by the target organisms. since 1950 at least 520 insect and mites species,273weeds, and 150 plants pathogens have developed resistance to one or more pesticides. when pesticides resistance developes, more frequent application and larger doses are often recommended. This leads to a pesticide trademill, where farmers pay moro and more for a pest control programme that becomes less and less effective. today experts are recognising the value of the alternative control approach of integrated pest management(Ipm). in ipm each crop and its pests are evaluated as part of an ecolgical system. A control programme is developed that includes a sequence of crop mangement, and biological and chemical controls. the aim is not pest eradication but a reduction in crop damage to an economically tolerable level. Well managed ipm programmes have outstanding success and are recognized as being economically and ecologically sound.

There are many definitions of integrated pest management
Integrated pest management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. Pesticides are used only after monitoring indicates they are needed according to established guidelines, and treatments are made with the goal of removing only the target organism. Pest control materials are selected and applied in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and nontarget organisms, and the environment.
A well-defined Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a program that should be based on prevention, monitoring, and control which offers the opportunity to eliminate or drastically reduce the use of pesticides, and to minimize the toxicity of and exposure to any products which are used. IPM does this by utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, including cultural, biological and structural strategies to control a multitude of pest problems.

    • The millipeded has no venomous legs.
    • The centipede's trunk segments each have a single pair of legs
    • The millipede's segments, two pairs of legs

    Comparison of Defensive Strategies
The centipede uses two modified legs on the last segment of its body trunk and two modified venomous legs on the first segment for defense; the millipede uses glands that run along its trunk to produce - and sometimes squirt - noxious chemicals that discourage predators.
    Comparison of Habitat
Both being susceptible to desiccation, a centipede seeks out stony crevices, fallen leaves, rotting logs, and the damp nooks in your home; the millipede favors decaying vegetation.

  161. Integrated pest management, or IPM, is a process you can use to solve pest problems while minimizing risks to people and the environment. IPM can be used to manage all kinds of pests anywhere—in urban, agricultural, and wildland or natural areas
With IPM, you take actions to keep pests from becoming a problem, such as by growing a healthy crop that can withstand pest attacks, using disease-resistant plants, or caulking cracks to keep insects or rodents from entering a building.
Rather than simply eliminating the pests you see right now, using IPM means you'll look at environmental factors that affect the pest and its ability to thrive. Armed with this information, you can create conditions that are unfavorable for the pest.
In IPM, monitoring and correct pest identification help you decide whether management is needed
Monitoring means checking your field, landscape, forest, or building—or other site—to identify which pests are present, how many there are, or what damage they've caused. Correctly identifying the pest is key to knowing whether a pest is likely to become a problem and determining the best management strategy.
After monitoring and considering information about the pest, its biology, and environmental factors, you can decide whether the pest can be tolerated or whether it is a problem that warrants control. If control is needed, this information also helps you select the most effective management methods and the best time to use them.

  178. IPM—integrated pest management—is your choice for solid science, sound solutions in dealing with pests. We promote safe, least-toxic solutions to both pest and pesticide problems.

What can IPM do for me? IPM helps you deal with pests—insects, plant diseases, weeds, and more—with methods that help keep health and environmental risks as low as possible while saving you money.

What’s in a name? IPM is integrated because it brings together, or integrates, a range of biological, organic, cultural, mechanical, and chemical options for pest problems. And it’s about management because you can only manage pests—you can’t eliminate them, no matter what people say. Although IPM used to focus on insect pests, the range now includes fungi, bacteria, viruses, weeds, wildlife, and more.

Integrated pest management rarely relies on just one tactic—it integrates tactics to prevent pests entirely or reduce them to levels you can live with.

    INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT
Integrated pest management ( IPM ), also known
as integrated pest control ( IPC) is a broad-based
approach that integrates practices for economic
control of pests . IPM aims to suppress pest
populations below the economic injury level (EIL)
. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation
defines IPM as "the careful consideration of all
available pest control techniques and subsequent
    integration of appropriate measures that
discourage the development of pest populations
and keep pesticides and other interventions to
levels that are economically justified and reduce
or minimize risks to human health and the
environment. IPM emphasizes the growth of a
healthy crop with the least possible disruption to
    agro-ecosystems and encourages natural pest
    control mechanisms."
    ADVANTAGES
The use of IPM has many advantages. Some of
    the most significant advantages include:
    (a). A reduced amount of broad-spectrum pesticide
    use in the environment.
(b). Reduced chance of pests developing resistance
    towards a specific pesticide.
(c). Reduced health risk to humans.
(d). Reduced health risk to pets and organisms
    that aren't being targeted.
(e). Less harm for the environment. DISADVANTAGES
    These include:
    (a). More involved planning.
    (b). More family decision-making.
(c). More demanding lawn and garden care.
(d). More resources needed as substitutions for
    pesticides.
(e). Requires a greater amount of outside knowledge.

IPM is a managed pest management system that:

    eliminates or mitigates economic and health damage caused by pests;
minimizes the use of pesticides and the risk to human health and the environment associated with pesticide applications; and
uses integrated methods, site or pest inspections, pest population monitoring, an evaluation of the need for pest control, and one or more pest control methods, including sanitation, structural repairs, mechanical and living biological controls, other non-chemical methods, and, if nontoxic options are unreasonable and have been exhausted, least toxic pesticides.

    2. State the differences between millipede and centipede

    Differences in Diet

  191. Although IPM used to focus on insect pests, the range now includes fungi, bacteria, viruses, weeds, wildlife, and more.Integrated pest management rarely relies on just one tactic—it integrates tactics to prevent pests entirely or reduce them to levels you can live with.

  193. Millipedes belong to Class Diplopoda and are more rigid arthropods distinguishable by their subcylindrical shape. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, whilemillipedes have two pairs. While most centipedes are known for their speed, millipedes move slowly and burrow.

IPM:This is known to be integrated pest management. it is a program that is based on prevention, monitoring and control which offers the opportunity to drastically reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides, and to minimize the toxicity of an exposure to any products which are used. IPM does this by utilizing a variety of methods and techniques including cultural, biological and structural strategies to control a multitude of pest problems.
This can be defined as an ecosystem - base strategy that focuses on long term prevention of PEST or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habit manupulation modification of cultural practices and use of resistance varieties.
Integrated pest management ( IPM ) can be used to manage all kind of pest anywhere in urban, agricultural and wild etc.
Integrated pest management ( IPM ) is also known as integrated pest control ( IPC ) is a broad based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pest .IPM aims to supress pest populations below the economic injury level. (EIL ) IPM is a managed pest management.

term prevention of pests or their
damage through a combination of techniques
such as biological control, habitat manipulation,
modification of cultural practices, and use of
resistant varieties. Pesticides are used only after
monitoring indicates they are needed according to
established guidelines, and treatments are made
with the goal of removing only the target
organism. Pest control materials are selected and
applied in a manner that minimizes risks to
    human health, beneficial and nontarget
    organisms, and the environment.
